AbCellera Biologics Inc. announced a strategic collaboration with Vertex Pharmaceuticals to research, develop, manufacture, and commercialize multispecific T-cell engagers (TCEs) targeting autoimmune diseases and other serious medical conditions. Under the agreement, AbCellera will leverage its proprietary T-cell engager platform to lead discovery and early-stage development, while Vertex will fund all research and development activities and retain the exclusive right to advance and commercialize therapeutic candidates emerging from the collaboration. The partnership combines AbCellera’s advanced antibody engineering technologies with Vertex’s expertise in developing transformative therapies, aiming to accelerate the creation of next-generation immunotherapies for diseases with significant unmet medical needs.
Collaboration Combines Advanced Antibody Engineering and Drug Development Expertise
The collaboration will utilize AbCellera’s fully integrated T-cell engager platform, which includes proprietary CD3-binding antibodies, costimulatory targeting technologies, multispecific protein engineering capabilities, and high-throughput functional screening assays. These technologies are designed to generate multispecific antibodies capable of precisely directing T cells toward disease-causing targets while improving therapeutic effectiveness and selectivity. Vertex will oversee later-stage clinical development, regulatory activities, and global commercialization of successful therapeutic candidates. The agreement also provides the opportunity for AbCellera to support cell line development, process development, and Phase 1 clinical manufacturing if both companies mutually agree, further expanding its role across the drug development process.
Agreement Includes Upfront Payment and Long-Term Milestone Opportunities
As part of the collaboration, AbCellera will receive $28 million in upfront payments and will be eligible for additional preclinical, clinical development, regulatory, and commercial milestone payments as partnered programs advance. The company is also entitled to receive tiered royalties on future net sales of any approved therapies developed through the collaboration. By funding all research and development costs, Vertex enables AbCellera to advance its innovative discovery platform while minimizing financial risk. The structure of the agreement reflects a shared commitment to accelerating the development of novel multispecific antibody therapies capable of addressing complex immune-mediated diseases.
