AbbVie and Iambic have announced a multi-year collaboration to accelerate AI-driven small-molecule drug discovery and development across immunology, neuroscience and oncology. The partnership combines AbbVie’s therapeutic-area and drug-discovery expertise with Iambic’s molecular superintelligence platform, with the companies aiming to identify and advance potential medicines with first-in-class or best-in-class characteristics. The collaboration represents another step in the growing use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in pharmaceutical research, where advanced computational models are increasingly being integrated with experimental chemistry and biology to improve the efficiency of early-stage drug discovery. Under the agreement, Iambic will receive an upfront payment and may also receive success-based milestone payments and tiered royalties on net sales of products generated through the collaboration.
AI Platform Targets Multiple Drug Discovery Challenges
The collaboration will apply Iambic’s AI technology to the discovery of new small-molecule therapies across three major therapeutic areas. Traditional small-molecule discovery requires researchers to assess numerous characteristics of candidate molecules, including potency, selectivity, pharmacokinetics and other properties, often through multiple sequential optimization cycles. Iambic’s platform is designed to evaluate multiple candidate properties simultaneously, potentially allowing researchers to make more informed decisions earlier in the discovery process. AbbVie said the partnership is intended to help its scientists design better molecules more efficiently and improve the probability of successful drug development.
At the center of the collaboration is Iambic’s Enchant v3, described by the company as a next-generation multimodal transformer model that integrates biomedical data from different stages of the drug-discovery process. The platform is designed to test multiple drug-design hypotheses in parallel and at scale. Iambic says Enchant v3 has been trained on more than 6,000 molecular properties, allowing the technology to support prediction and optimization across a broad range of characteristics relevant to drug development. The company is combining these AI capabilities with automated chemistry and biology experimentation to create an integrated discovery workflow.
AbbVie Combines AI With Therapeutic Expertise
AbbVie brings extensive experience in immunology, neuroscience and oncology, the three therapeutic areas selected for the collaboration. According to the company, AI is becoming an increasingly important component of its research and development strategy through its AI@AbbVie approach, which is intended to apply artificial intelligence to scientific innovation, decision-making and the discovery and development of medicines. The partnership with Iambic provides AbbVie’s discovery teams with access to a specialized AI platform while maintaining the role of scientific expertise in selecting and advancing drug candidates.
Iambic’s technology combines AI-powered molecular design with automated experimentation, creating a feedback process in which computational predictions can be evaluated through laboratory studies. The company says its platform has already contributed to the discovery of a novel drug candidate that advanced into clinical development in approximately two years, alongside a broader preclinical pipeline. The new AbbVie collaboration will extend the use of this technology into additional therapeutic programs and will focus on discovering molecules that could potentially address unmet medical needs.
Partnership Advances AI-Powered Pharmaceutical R&D
The collaboration illustrates how major pharmaceutical companies are increasingly working with specialized technology companies to integrate AI into early-stage drug discovery. Rather than replacing laboratory research, the approach described by AbbVie and Iambic is designed to combine computational prediction, medicinal chemistry, biology and pharmaceutical expertise. By evaluating multiple molecular properties concurrently, AI platforms may help researchers prioritize compounds and reduce some of the iterative work involved in conventional discovery programs. However, the collaboration is focused on drug discovery and development, and the announcement does not identify specific clinical drug candidates or demonstrate clinical efficacy from the new partnership. The companies will pursue programs with potential to produce first-in-class and best-in-class medicines in immunology, neuroscience and oncology. Iambic’s compensation will be linked partly to the successful progression of products arising from the collaboration through milestone payments and royalties, aligning the commercial structure with development outcomes. As pharmaceutical R&D continues to incorporate advanced computational technologies, the AbbVie-Iambic partnership highlights the expanding role of AI-powered molecular design, multimodal data analysis and automated experimentation in the search for new medicines.
